Purpose
The purpose of the study for the degree of Doctor of Theology is to enable the candidate to achieve such mastery of the field of his specialization as will equip him to do original research and creative work in academic and pastoral ministries.

Admission
For admission to the program, the candidate must have met all of the requirements for the M.Div. and Th.M. degrees or its equivalent. A complete transcript of previous academic work is to be submitted before an application for admission can be acted upon. These transcript s will be evaluated in terms of the entrance and graduation requirements of Covenant University with for allowances for equivalence.

Required documents and fee

•  Application Form I and II: an application is valid for one year.
•  Personal Statement (in 250 words or more) describing reasons for wanting to study with confession of faith.
•  Resume
•  Official transcripts of all academic work undertaken since graduation from high school. A final official transcript indicating that Th.M. degree or its equivalent has been granted should be submitted.
•  Application Fee ($50)

Admission to Candidacy
For admission to candidacy for the Th.D. degree, a candidate must:
1. Have demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language in which theological literature is available, as well as in the Biblical languages.
2. Have completed at least 27 quarter hours in residence with a quality point average of no less than 3.0. Individual courses will be credited towards degree requirements with a grade of B or better.
 3. Be approved as a candidate for the Th.D. degree by the Graduate Academic Dean.
 4. Have Proficiency and qualifying tests completed by the time the student has finished 27 hours of graduate work at Covenant University. No student may register for additional work for credit toward the Th.D. until he has met this criterion and so student may begin work on a dissertation until he has been admitted as a candidate for the Th.D. degree.

Degree Requirement
The Doctor of Theology Program requires 54 hours of work beyond the M. Div and Th.M. This must be earned with 45 units in a major field and 9 hours of credit through extensive readings and research. The Graduate Academic Dean may set such additional requirements as are needed for completing the program in a mutually acceptable way.
Covenant University offers Th.D. work in Biblical Studies and Theology. Students entering with a S.T.M. degree from another institution will be allowed no more than 24 hours of credit by transfer. Such candidates may offer no more than 12 hours through research project or extensive reading projects.
Covenant University has adopted “A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Thesis and Dissertations” by Kate L. Turabian (latest edition), the “MLA Style Manual” or “A Manual of Style” (University of Chicago Press) as prescribed manuals for the preparation of dissertations and major papers. Students are expected to follow one of these manuals in the writing of their dissertations and major papers.
The Candidate must submit an acceptable dissertation which shall be a contribution to creative theology.

Specialization
Candidates will choose their area of specialization and will do their Doctoral Project within that area. In this project they may focus on such area of theology as the following: Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, and Church History.
